Day 045

Change

Abstract mark: a single line dividing into two paths

On the one thing that stays

“Nothing endures but change.”

Heraclitus, Fragments

Four words that undo themselves and mean to. If change is the only permanence, then permanence exists after all, and it is not the thing anyone was hoping for.

What the line asks you to give up is the expectation of arrival — the idea that some future arrangement will finally hold still. The relief in it, such as it is, comes from the same place: nothing you are enduring now is the settled state either.
