On what outweighs the fear
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.”
The useful word is judgment. Courage here is not a feeling that arrives to replace fear, and waiting for that substitution is how people conclude they do not have any.
It is a comparison, made while frightened, about which of two things matters more. That makes it available on ordinary days and also more demanding: you have to actually have something that outweighs the fear, and be able to name it.
