Impermanence

Abstract mark: currents passing over submerged stones

On seeing it rather than agreeing

“All conditioned things are impermanent. When one sees this with wisdom, one turns away from suffering.”

Dhammapada, Dhammapada, 277

Everyone agrees with the first sentence and almost nobody sees it, which is the distinction the second one is drawing. Agreement is cheap; it changes nothing about how a lost thing feels.

Seeing here means something closer to noticing it while holding the thing — the cup unbroken, the person still in the room. What turns is not the fact but the grip on it, and the text is careful to say this takes wisdom rather than resolve.
