Day 003

3 September 2026

Impermanence

Abstract mark: currents passing over submerged stones

On the river that will not wait

No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man.

Heraclitus, Fragments

Heraclitus was not talking about rivers. He was talking about you. The body you wake in is not quite the one that fell asleep; the conviction you held yesterday has shifted by a hair.

This sounds like loss, and partly it is. But if nothing holds still, then what feels heavy today is not your permanent condition either — it is water, currently passing.
