Day 004

Presence

Abstract mark: rings widening from a single point

On staying where your feet are

Confine yourself to the present.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations VII.29

Four words, with no comfort and no ornament. Marcus Aurelius wrote them to himself, not to us — as a reminder, not a teaching.

The past is closed and the future does not exist yet, and still the mind lives in both and pays rent there. The present is the only place where anything can actually be done.
