On the life frittered away by detail
“Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify.”
Thoreau was not complaining about clutter on a desk. He meant the hundred small obligations that arrive without being invited and are answered without being questioned.
Each one is reasonable on its own. Together they leave nothing over. Simplifying is less about removing things than about noticing which of them you never actually agreed to — and letting those go first.
