On the thing already known
“To see what is right and not to do it is want of courage.”
Confucius is not describing ignorance. The situation he names is one where the right thing is perfectly visible — the word to say, the favour to refuse — and something else intervenes.
He gives that something a name, and it is not busyness or bad timing. Naming it plainly is uncomfortable, which may be why we prefer to describe such moments as complicated.
