Resilience

Abstract mark: a bent reed still held at the root

On what winter is required for

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.”

Albert Camus, Return to Tipasa, 1952

The line is printed on a great many mugs, which has cost it its setting. Camus wrote it in the middle of an essay about going back to a place he had loved and finding it in rain, ruined, wrong.

The French verb is closer to I was learning than I found — a process, not a discovery. The summer is not a reserve of good feeling. It is something that only becomes apparent in the season that seems to disprove it.
