On which direction wakes you
“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
Written in a letter to a patient, not as a maxim, which is worth keeping in view — it was addressed to one person in difficulty rather than offered to everyone.
The pairing is doing the work. Looking outward is not called wrong; it is called dreaming, which is what happens when the material of a life comes entirely from elsewhere. What wakes a person is not better information but a turn of the head, and Jung thought most people manage it late.
